Uber Important Software!! - Anti-Virus

If you have Window 7 or Vista installed in your computer, the first thing to pop up after the installation of Window 7 or Vista would be asking you to install AntiVirus software. I recently reinstalled my Window 7 Professional due to a breakdown in my hard disk and I was forced to buy a new hard disk to replace the old one.

Obviously, there must be a reason why the Microsoft OS developer would want you to install AntiVirus first? Indeed, one should find reliable, efficient and effective antivirus software to guards against viruses, spyware, and other malicious software.

I have been using Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) (http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/) since its launch and I personally recommend MSE as it has a user friendly interface and more efficient as compared with others free software. In this particular post, I will be comparing MSE with AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition (AVG) as AVG was the most popular and most downloaded Anti-Virus (http://download.cnet.com/windows/most-popular/3101-20_4-0.html) .

Both Anti-viruses will be evaluated based on three criteria, which is in terms of User Interface, Customer Support and Performance.

MSE vs AVG – User Interface

The user interface of AVG constantly reminds the user that they are using a free edition. Other than this drawback, AVG is much like MSE’s interface. Both have a user interface that is easy to understand and navigate.

MSE vs AVG – Customer Support

This is where the AVG free edition has a major drawback. There is no customer support for the free version of AVG. On the contrary, you have a good knowledgebase, Microsoft Support Answers and even personal customer support such as email and phone for MSE.

MSE vs AVG – Performance

While MSE seems to take up more space in memory owing to the built-in Windows Defender, a background scan does not slow down your computer. The case is not the same with the AVG free antivirus package. Based on a an article by Donna Buenaventura (http://www.brighthub.com/computing/smb-security/articles/65083.aspx?p=2), MSE offers 97 percent protection while AVG offers only 89 percent.

As such, it is MSE that offers more compare to the AVG. Additionally, as the antivirus product is from the Microsoft, you can always expect improvements in the product. So, start protecting your computer today by installing antivirus and BACKUP your files in your primary drive (D:), CD and so forth.

Better install than sorry!!

Note:

*If you are using genuine Windows, then great, you are able to install Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) to your computer. If you are not using one, I suggest you get a genuine one. J
